Spera Humanoid: South Asia’s First Homegrown Security Humanoid

Overview of the Spera Humanoid Breakthrough

Spera unveiled Spera Humanoid – Prototype One, a full-scale bipedal humanoid developed from scratch for security applications. The launch marks the company’s ninth anniversary and a milestone for Sri Lanka and the wider South Asian technology sector.

Built from the ground up by Sri Lankan engineering talent, the Spera Humanoid is a security platform designed in Sri Lanka for the global market. Unlike robots imported as completed systems or assembled locally using foreign-developed platforms, Spera’s humanoid is the result of original Sri Lankan engineering, research and development.

Spera Founder and CEO Sahan Yapa is a self-taught engineer and a bootstrapped entrepreneur. He discovered his passion for building machines in early childhood.

Yapa taught himself software development, electronics, mechanics and robotics. He believed Sri Lanka could build technology capable of competing internationally.

Yapa and his team faced failed experiments, unsuccessful prototypes and financial challenges for years. Without significant external capital, he bootstrapped the vision by building a software company that delivered blockchain, Industry 4.0 and emerging technology solutions to global clients.

Revenue and experience from the software business were reinvested into humanoid robotics. Years of work by a team of Sri Lankan engineers have produced a functioning prototype.

Spera says the prototype has attracted interest from international markets, particularly for security applications in high-risk operational environments. The company plans to introduce the product in several countries as it moves towards commercial deployment.

Spera plans to follow Prototype One with a second-generation model, Spera 2.0, as it scales the platform.

“This humanoid was built with a vision, a dream and the belief that Sri Lankan engineers can create globally relevant technology from the ground up,” said Yapa. “We failed many times, but we continued building. Today, we are ready to show the world what Sri Lanka can achieve. We are opening Sri Lanka’s door to the emerging US$5 trillion global humanoid robotics economy”

The launch caps a personal journey for Yapa: A childhood fascination with machines that grew into what Spera describes as South Asia’s first homegrown security humanoid.

As Spera enters its next chapter, its message is clear: engineered in Sri Lanka, built for the world.
