City of Dreams adds Scope Cinemas as flagship entertainment anchor

Scope Cinemas will open a five-screen multiplex at The Shoppes at City of Dreams Sri Lanka before the end of this year, becoming a flagship attraction in the integrated development’s next phase of retail and entertainment expansion.

The multiplex, scheduled to open on Level 10, will feature next-generation cinema technology alongside two VIP cinema halls, each with a private lobby and a dedicated gourmet dining offering.

The addition is expected to strengthen the entertainment component of The Shoppes, which is approaching its first anniversary after opening in August 2025.

Levels 7 and 8 of the retail complex are currently operational. The waterfront ground floor and Levels 9 and 10 are due to open under the development’s phased rollout, adding new retail, dining and entertainment offerings.

The upcoming floors will also house a food court, expanded entertainment facilities and a nightlife destination, as City of Dreams seeks to position the complex as a broader leisure destination rather than a conventional shopping centre.

“The Shoppes was always envisioned as more than a retail destination. It was designed to bring together shopping, dining and entertainment in a way that encourages people to stay longer, return more often and discover something new with every visit,” Cinnamon Life at City of Dreams Sri Lanka Senior Vice President for Colombo Hotels and General Manager Kamal Munasinghe said.

He described the partnership with Scope Cinemas as a significant step in the development’s efforts to expand its lifestyle and entertainment offering.

The cinema operator said the multiplex would combine new screening technology with premium hospitality and curated entertainment.

“By combining next-generation technology, premium hospitality and thoughtfully curated entertainment, this multiplex will set a new benchmark for movie-going in Sri Lanka and give audiences more reasons to experience cinema on the big screen,” Scope Cinemas Chairman and CEO Naveed Cader said.

Scope Cinemas was announced as an anchor tenant at an event held on Wednesday alongside the Sri Lankan premiere of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. The Shoppes, which partnered with the cinema operator for the premiere, also staged what it described as Sri Lanka’s first Spider-Man-inspired drone show.

The new multiplex forms part of The Shoppes’ broader expansion within City of Dreams Sri Lanka, which has been developed as an integrated destination spanning hospitality, retail, dining and entertainment.
