Overview of the Rural High-Speed Broadband Rollout
Thousands of people in rural areas have been connected to faster broadband through a government-backed rollout.
More than 11,500 premises in Dorset and south Somerset can now access gigabit-capable broadband under Project Gigabit, a scheme to improve connectivity in areas that would otherwise miss out.
The project has connected hard-to-reach premises across Dorset and south Somerset.
The first communities to benefit with provider Wessex Internet include Beaminster South and Salwayash in Dorset, as well as Aller and Dinnington in Somerset.
The project is backed by up to £39m of government funding and is expected to reach nearly 25,000 homes and businesses.
The government said the upgrades would help people working from home, running businesses, accessing online services, completing schoolwork and staying connected with family and friends.
UK Telecoms Minister Ian Murray said: “Better broadband means more than being connected to the internet. It means being connected to opportunity.
“It gives people, wherever they live, the reliable connection they need to start and grow a business from home, access education, and stay in touch with friends, family and loved ones.
“Project Gigabit is about investing in communities that risk being left behind and ensuring they have the same opportunities as everyone else.”
